OMGoodness!!! This happened to me...and I hate admitting it. I know...to trusting. I hear it all the time. Mine occurred as a house cleaning job. Yeah, the couple is away in Spain on their honeymoon.Lol! Wanted their home cleaned and other tasks,before they headed back to the states. I never posted a cleaning ad, but was going to. I guess...I will be recieving a check soon. Feel like an idiot,but thanks for the stories.ugh!

I a few days ago decided to start repairing PCs on the side for extra money. I placed an ad on Craig's List and not one full day later I've received two of these offers. Do you think banks offer rewards for catching these turds? That WOULD be a great business opportunity.

Hmm, I don't know if the banks do or not. I guess if you actually received a fake check from one of these people, you could go to the bank manager and talk to them about it.

I believe I was just scammed the same way - house cleaning.....I even deposited the check today. I guess I will have to go to the bank tomorrow and the police station. Anything else I should do???

Nancy, if you are suspicious of the check you deposited, yes, go to the bank first thing in the morning and talk to the bank manager about it. If it is fake, he or she will be able to tell you what to do next!

You know.. I just posted on CL to supplement income because I have 25 years technical experience in computers.. Wouldn't you know I got a hit, almost identical to what you described.. laptops, xp,office, avg, etc.. certified check blah blah blah.. it's so said that we can't even make an honest dollar without having to clean the #$%@# off of it first. Fortunately, I got a 2nd very similar hit (too much for coincidence) so I googled.. what I found make me halt the service call in the middle. Now I say.. due to an increase in scams, please provide me your name, address, city,state and drivers license #, state, expiry for verfication.. if it verifies, I will open a ticket.. usually don't hear back.. hmm.. wonder why :) BTW,for those others wondering, scammers use very specific, repeatable language.. if it wasn't a scam, it would become apparent very quickly.

Well, I am one of the idiots who got hit twice on furniture. Once on Kijiji and once on Craigslist, I had my bank call the issuing banks in order to verify that the checks were good, bad or what. The issuing banks verified the accounts. We even went as far as giving check numbers, endorsers, etc. Now the checks have been returned bad and my bank is holding me responsible. After the checks came back bad, we called the issuing banks again and asked the same questions and were told that on one account thru JPMorgan Chase in New York, multiple checks in amounts totalling tens of thousands had been drafted on that account. Then on the other check the second time we called we were told that the numbering was out of sequence and the endorser was not someone who was listed on the account to sign checks. Why didn't these institutions tell MY bank this the FIRST time we called? Now I have to take out a loan to cover the checks because I was stupid enough to wire the money as requested. I am pissed off and don't know why MY bank is holding me responsible when I had them call to verify the validity of the checks and was told they were good. My bank didn't even recommend putting a hold on the funds until the checks cleared (or didn't). Do I have any recourse? What happens if I refuse to take the loan and tell my banking institution that they are responsible for this? I need advice, I am devastated and feel like such an idiot and I want to know how I can make a difference...I am not going to sit back and take this quietly. The local law enforcement say they have no jurisdiction, the FBI says they can't help. What the heck? Who is there for us, the consumer? I have learned my lesson the hard way but I want to know if I have to take this loan or tell the bank to persue the offenders to recover their money and close my account. I know that if I do this my credit is screwed, but there has to be some justice somewhere for me. Please send recommendations or comments asap as I am to meet with my bank again this morning. You can post to my blog on how we got screwed when we bought our first home. It hasn't been a good few months for us. BTW I am in Texas if that matters. Please, please anyone who can give advise I would appreciate it. I think I am stuck taking the loan, which the bank is offering a 0% interest loan which makes me wonder if they really are responsible and screwing me over too.

To Jacqui J - Pursue the criminals via the originating bank. In other words, the bank account that the check was issued through. They did tell your bank that the account existed, right? So that is the direction to chase. Get very specific. Write down names and job titles of each phone call you make to pursue this. Find out if they are part of the problem. It could be that someone copied a fake check but you really cant do that because if you make a check it must have the router # and be bank approved before its printed. The bank would know if they issued these checks. They pretend to be ignorant but they know more than they admit.

I got hit 3 times. I have a question. Say you cash these checks/money orders. What could the bank do after you cashed it and found out that the check was bad? I mean, since the law doesn't get involved or whatever, why couldn't you just keep the money? What's wrong with making a little money off a bank that screws people every day?

What Happens if you replied to those emails and they say they are gonna send you a check. I haven't received anything yet. I am thinking go to the authorities. I received the one that talked about needing that whole list done for their computers and was relieved and amazed about the opportunity. Then I got two more similar emails within these past two weeks which made me REALLY REALLY REALLY suspicious, but I still responded, but this whole computer in bulk thing kept bugging me because I knew something wasn't right. So, I decided to do some research and I came upon this site about this scam rather quickly. I am quite disappointed about this shitty situation and how many people are constantly trying to scam others.

I feel like an idiot, but desperate times make you hope for the impossible i guess.

Any helpful suggestions?

Still looked genuine until this point. I guess I noticed a few things like their new/fake domain name that did not match that of ActionAid which is a real organisation. Also after googling it the company spells their name "ActionAid" and not "Action Aid". This could have been nothing but didn't feel like it so I sent the following reply.

I just had a similiar email that I just responded to yesterday and was in the process of the second reply when I came across this in Tony Dozier email "Get back to me with your total cost for the services of 7 units ( Labour Only). Dont accept anything from Tony Dozier, is a complete SCAM! He sent me a message to be his personal assistant, so I called ActionAid which does exist and nobody answered, so I checked on ActionAid staff, directors, etc. And there's nobody named Tony Dozier.

Please dont let him fool you!!! I sent an e-mail to the organization explaning the situation to see if they could give me any other answer or just to make them aware. I will let know about their answer.

Has anyone actually received any laptops? And if so if you've fallen for the scam and wired cash sale the laptops yourself and try to get the difference to clear your self of any negative activity in the bank.. Just like someone said scam the scammer... Don't fall victim of these stupid crimes.

Don't try this...you'll end up in far greater trouble than if you'd simply deposited it. If you cash a check with a bank, and it returns to them as a bad check, they have legal rights to remove the amount of the check (plus a return check fee) from your account. If you have no money in your account, the account will go negative, and if it is not brought positive in a short period of time, they will close the account and report you to collections, where your credit will get massively messed up. I've seen it happen far too many times.

I've been looking for work, sendingout resumes thru Craigs List for a few months. I have received 13 of the "repair laptop" emails. The first one went as far as me getting a letter telling me the check would be sent that day. A second email then told me to "Moneygram" the diff to a person in South Carolina. By that time I had received 5 or 6 emails and knew it was a scam

another one I get all the time.. when you are looking for a job they contact you saying they have a job for you, and later on, they said..sorry I was to tired and replied to your ad by mistake. I was looking for someone else that had an ad on the same page. although, I can probably make a space for you and see if you quialify for the position...yeah right!! I've got this a lot..so either that person is very stupid and makes mistakes all the time, (I don't know how it keeps that job) or.. Scam!!voila!!

WOW!!..That happened to me but what I decided to do is let them send me the checks then I go to the bank on the check and then I tell them exactly the situation and they investigate who sent it then BOOM they get a big fine at there doorstep they should be paying me to do this lol..I later on got an email by the scamer and they said for me to go to hell and that I should f**k off :D..Then I got a call from that bank telling me they found where it came from and that they were going to jail for giving out fraudulent checks

I also reponded to a craigs list job opportunity and carried on email correspondence with "Michelle" who was moving here from Paris. I got the whole story about how she was working for the EPA and would need someone to set up her apt and clean "thrice" a week. I was hungary for a job and it sounded viable to me. I am(was) a very trusting sole. I did have reservations about some things, as we corresponded the language changed, she did'nt sound as Euorpeon as in the beginning and when the check arrived I was excited but wary. I deposited the check and waited two days for more email (she was sending me a list of supplies)When she asked me to send money on to the guy in Florida who was in charge of the renovations to her new apt......BIG RED FLAG. I called the bank, the police and the place (a university) the the check was written on.It seems there were a few other people that the university had heard from. I am out nothing but my humility and ofcourse the job but will never use craigs list again for that type of thing. Do these scumbags think that conning real people out of money is actually easier than getting a real job. I spent all day yesterday stewing about this and that is the only thing they are getting from me. It is time to move on. By the way they do have my cell # and have been calling me.... sometimes it is just fun to give a bad time. Please be careful out and DO NOT send anyone money for anything!!

I have been emailed the same information as all of you have. I did not look into the situation as should have but, in good time, my best freind found some information regarding these types of scams. I have read all the information provided by all of you and I am aware now. I did give my name but, I have not accepted anything from anyone. I am dicountinuing communications with this person and I will cooperate with anyone towards any attacts toward the individuals behind this type of activity.

The individual how has been sending me request is name Philip Casillo. He claims to be part of Action Aid International. I will not receive anymore information and I will report them as well. I have contacted fed-ex and there was a package to be sent to me today, I have refused the delivery and I am not involving my bank in anyway. I am keeping record of it all. Carlos, The same "Phillip Castillio" is still in business. I am in the Portland, OR area and he has struck here as well. What tipp[ed me off was he said the contact in Peru had bad cell service in his area. Unfortunately for him I knew the area and (of all things) my father in law sells cell phones in the area. They have better coverage than AT&T (no offense).

Well I just got an email in response to applying for a job posting on craigslist. they say the company is Quantros inc agency. I researched it and found its just another scam being played. I get two or three scam email replies every other day and am really getting pissed.These people play on others who really could be vulnerable. They use legitimate company names and that should be enough to put them in jail if someone could pinpoint who is doing it.!!!

Theres a couple other twists to that scam. There are the ones where "cleaning services are needed" even when you never posted as a cleaner. Then beware of the: "is this item yours", and the "can we swap items", with a link to the other persons item. BOTH OF THOSE ARE SPYWARES and will give them your craigslist account info. What that advantage is I dont know, but if you fall for it, your account box will overload from other peoples adds/stuff that got hacked. Real people usually give VERIFIABLE phone numbers. I stick with that. So far, all my transactions have been good ones. Much scammers though. BEWARE.

I was the victim of a similar scam about 3 years ago wanting me to buy and send 40-50 monitors out. A check was paid into another branch of my bank so I never saw it but my bank spotted it as fraud and rang me. I didn't lose out luckily as I was going to wait for cleared funds anyway.

It amazes me that these guys still try it on. Thanks to sites like this a few more people will be saved the distress and embarrassment.

I tried to send him a PayPal invoice, and that's what tipped me off... my suggestion; write a PayPal invoice to see if the email address is real or not

I got this fucker on the run. The guy who says he's James Scott... I got him to call me on a number. 609-403-2103. It's based out of Ewing, NJ or Trenton, NJ. I can't get a definite on it. It's some Nigerian douchebag who when I called and said that the address on the check for the bank didnt match any branch, he told me to just cash it anyway and it should clear... so I told him, why? So you can then get my bank account information with your scam? I've since been calling him using a Fake Caller ID program on my jailbroken iPhone, calling from such numbers as the ActionAid organization that's listed on the site, and left a message using an accent saying that they are going to be investigating this matter... I then called him using the local Ewing and Trenton police department numbers... needless to say he didn't pick up.

Everyone spam call this fucker, spam his email, bomb his email... if you know any local police in the area, bring this matter to him. I was smart enough not to let this guy get me, but there's tons out there that are being scammed by him every day.

I entered a computer repair ad, Got all the same e-mails that everyone has mentioned above. I came up with a more personal approach, I will probably not make an impression on a criminal but it sure made me feel good, this is how I replied to a few after several replies and back and forth through e-mail. Luckily i did not fall for it and ran across these articles enlightening me of the situation ahead of time:

Just think hard and deep for a brief moment if you will…….

You’re on your death bed, close family and friends are with you, including children (nieces, nephew’s, friend’s, children, etc...) and they are all looking at you, sad. You somberly gaze over to all of them. You hear them speaking of you quietly, summarizing your life, character and impacting influences that you may have made on others. You hear one of them mention how honest and hard working of an individual you were…someone they can look up to, respect and count on. Someone who is a strong intelligent mentor who respects everyone the same, no matter who they are, someone who is honest and how they would like their children to be when they grow up; The people that REALLY know you in that same room over hear this, look over at you and look away. At that point you think of all the hard working people that you may have negatively impacted with your computer fraud scam... These honest hard working people may have been legally pursued and charged by banks and other institutions because of the criminal and fraudulent situation you directly hand crafted and placed them in.

I have received many of these. I just tell them I have to use my own shippers for liability reasons and I accept all forms of payment and we will hold all equipment until the check has cleared. They never respond to take it any further once I say that.

This scam is a bit different than the ones posted. I posted on craigslist in the Chicago area looking for part time office/IT work to supplement my current p/t job. I got an email:

As i notice these scams are all from the same site then Craigslist should be responsible for finding out who the scammers are and dealing with them as customers are are using their site and being scammed by these bogus opportunities ,some responsibilities should be upheld on the party as you are using their service and you are a customer....I have used numerous dating sites and believe me most of these sites are hit by thousand of scheming scammers ,out of 40 people ,you may only get 2-3 genuine people...so you are taking a big risks in theses sites ...there was a documentary programme i think its called 50/50 where they investigated theses scammers majority from Nigeria sitting behind computers and thousands of people falling for their scams ....i was told by one of theses scammers that picture profiles they use are normally from sites ,i am not sure how they get access to these and they will normally ask you to email letters and pictures to them and they reuse your pictures and letters to create profiles....sometimes i wonder how much these sites are not telling or owning up....just be careful if it is too good to be true then that person does not exists or if you find a flaw in their communicating or incoherent in their language be very wary ,if they insist you not chat on the site and email them,i would be skeptical....last but not least ask them to Skype then you can hear and see them personally that they are genuine ...believe me if the party is genuine he will agree otherwise he may block his face and guess what its a Nigerian behind that voice...yes been there many times....be very cautious about dating sites...hope this helps.

Sent him an official invoice, the next move is on him. All the infomation on there for payee is public, I gave him no personal info other than what he can glean from my email address. If I do get a check I will call see what some of my friends can glean off it.

He did offer me an additional $50 for my running around. Oh well easy come easy go.

I got that email back saying they were relocating to the states, they would send me a check etc. etc. bla bla, then I got 2 other emails saying the same thing, just a different family situation...so I emailed the one guy back I want him to send me a check so I can nail him!!
